Blackton Grange celebrates it’s first anniversary after 250 years !

In January 2007 First Ascent acquired the beautiful (but uneconomic) hill farm (250 years old) that had become Baldersdale Youth Hostel in the 1970’s. Positioned at the half-way point of the Pennine Way, the YHA had great hopes for their new hostel. Unfortunately, it was not to be and the facility was also uneconomic as a hostel. In January 2006, First Ascent bought the 11 acre site and after 3 intensive months of refurbishment, it was formally opened by a local farmer who was born in the farm 60 years before ans still farms the valley.

Blackton Grange Development Centre was ready for action in its new role - third time lucky! And plenty of action it has seen too, in it’s exciting first year; from First Ascent corporate clients, to family re-unions; from a hindu retreat weekend to kids sports clubs using it as a training camp. The refurbishment of Blackton Grange aimed to retain the beautiful features and tradition, but make it a flexible facility for a range of uses.

Blackton Grange has been declared a huge success by First Ascent, our clients and the local community – who have supported the injection of new life into the area with wholehearted enthusiasm. Hats off to everyone involved in this wonderful project to rebuild and refresh our very own corner of the stunning Pennine landscape !!

Please call Steve Bentley if you (and up to 46 other people) may be interested in utilising “the Grange” for business or personal use.
