Foundation Report: Leadership Lessons from Rio

This report captures the practical actions and ideas from the 20th First Ascent Foundation Event that brought senior leaders together to diagnose and discuss the leadership lessons that can be learnt from the Rio Olympics.

The report includes:

  • Initial reflections on the Olympics from a leadership perspective.

  • An overview of how UK Sport achieved their ambitious medal target through a people-centred ‘Rio Readiness Project’ from Charlotte Edward, Performance Director Developer, UK Sport.

  •  An insight from Jon Austin, Performance Director at Badminton England into the challenges of an away Olympic Games and the methods they used to prepare for extreme pressure and the unexpected.

  •  A First Ascent perspective on the Rio Olympics, analysing Team GB’s success at multiple levels.

  •  Practical actions to take away around three key themes: investing in relationships, maintain focus on the vision and preparing for pressure.
