English Heritage

A leadership development programme for over 100 leaders, ranging from head office leaders to individual site managers across England.

Organisation Overview

English Heritage cares for over 400 historic buildings, monuments and sites - from world-famous prehistoric sites to grand medieval castles, from Roman forts on the edges of the empire, to a Cold War bunker. Through these, they bring the story of England to life for over 10 million people each year.

Our Approach

A significant design exercise was undertaken to begin, including visits to a large number of individual site managers across England. First Ascent then delivered a launch event to introduce the programme.

The core programme consisted of two modules, covering leadership skills, team performance development, change management and influencing skills. Action Learning Sets were also implemented as part of the programme.

Specific team development programmes and one-to-one executive coaching were also delivered to assist specific people and teams within the organisation, including the Stonehenge and Battle Abbey teams.

The leadership programme continues to evolve as the organisation requires a more commercial approach to managing itself as a charity.

Impact and ROI

Kirkpatrick analysis has demonstrated that the programme delivered significant behaviour changes across the leadership teams and at least 36x Return on Investment.
